As with many towns in the area, Okotoks was formerly a railway town. Although passenger service ended in 1971, the line is still used to transport freight south to the US border. Previously known as Sheep Creek and then Dewdney, the town got its current name from the CPR in 1897. That name is derived from the Blackfoot First Nation word for “rock” — “ohkotok”.
The rock in question is found 8km west of the town, the world’s largest glacial erratic which was used as a landmark when First Nations travellers planned to cross the river.
Today, the town offers all the amenities of modern life, including shops, restaurants and various recreation options, such as the Spray Park, Okotoks Rec Centre and others. Okotoks also has some highly rated schools at both elementary and secondary level which are sure to attract home buyers with young families.
